Most game consoles that stop working have one of a handful of faults, and most of those can be repaired. Yours might have a bent HDMI port from a cable that got yanked, a dusty heatsink, a drive that gave up, or a stick that wore out. We do game console repair at 1927 W Chicago Ave in West Town, and we take consoles by mail from anywhere in the US.
HDMI port replacement on a PS5 or Xbox Series X is $149.99. Most consoles are done in 1 to 3 business days, and you hear the price before any work starts. For PS5 repair in Chicago you can walk in during open hours. Call (773) 741-6682 first if you want to check the current wait.
What we fix
These are the faults we cover, from PS5 repair to Xbox repair and Switch work.
- PS5 HDMI port. No signal, a loose port or bent pins, on Disc, Digital, Slim and Pro models.
- Xbox HDMI port. Series X, Series S and Xbox One consoles with no picture.
- PS4 HDMI port. The same fault on older PlayStation consoles.
- Nintendo Switch. Joy-Con drift, cracked screens and consoles that won't charge or dock. Nintendo Switch repair covers the Switch, OLED and Lite.
- Overheating. Consoles that shut down, or fans that scream under load.
- Power faults. Consoles that won't start, blink and stop, or trip the power supply.
- Disc drives. Discs that won't read or eject themselves.
HDMI ports are soldered to the main board, and we do that board-level work in house.
Is it the console or the TV?
Before you box anything up, spend ten minutes on these. They rule out a surprising share of no-picture problems.
- Unplug everything for two minutes, including the TV. HDMI handshakes can hang, and a full power cycle clears them.
- Try a different cable and a different TV input. A cheap HDMI cable fails more often than the port does.
- Try another TV or monitor. It rules out the TV, which is a free answer.
- Look in the port with a flashlight. Bent pins or a tilted connector mean the console is the problem. Stop plugging things in, because each try can do more harm.
- Boot a PS5 into Safe Mode. Hold the power button until the second beep, then pick a lower resolution. The PS5 no signal guide walks through it step by step.
Overheating, and why it's usually dust
A console that shuts off mid-game is usually telling you it is hot. Dust packs into the heatsink and fan, and the air stops moving. Pets and carpets make it worse. Try moving the console out of a closed cabinet and leave a few inches on each side. If it still shuts down or the fan roars during easy games, it needs opening and cleaning, and on some consoles the thermal material needs replacing too.
The PS5 uses liquid metal rather than ordinary thermal paste, so it isn't one to open at home. An Xbox or PS4 that has run hot for years is often overdue for fresh paste.
Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo first?
If your console is under a year old and the fault isn't physical damage, check the maker's warranty before paying anyone. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all run their own repair services. Nintendo has also repaired Joy-Con drift at no charge in the US, and it's worth checking whether that still applies to yours.
Manufacturer repair means shipping the console away for a while, and physical damage like a broken port is usually on you. Their fix may also send back a different unit, so back up your saves. An independent PS5 repair keeps your own console, and it often comes back faster.
Is it worth fixing?
For a current console, usually. A PS5 or Series X holds its value, and PS5 repair costs much less than replacing the console. For a PS4 or Xbox One, compare our quote with a used replacement before you decide, because older consoles sell cheaply. A Switch Lite with drift is worth repairing. A Switch with a cracked screen and a dead port might not be. We give you the number and you decide.
How to get it to us
In Chicago, bring it to the shop during open hours. Bring the console and nothing else, unless the fault involves the power cable. If you are anywhere else in the US, start a mail-in repair and we will send you the steps. The rest of our prices are on the pricing page. Parts carry our 90-day warranty, and labor may apply.

Needed my laptop keyboard replaced, but I couldn’t be without my laptop for a few days. I bought the replacement keyboard on Amazon and found him through Yelp. After watching a YouTube video, I quickly realized it was more complicated than I wanted to tackle myself! He replaced the keyboard within a couple of hours, and I picked it up the same day. Straightforward, fast, and clearly knows what he’s doing. Highly recommend!

What do people ask us?
How expensive is it to fix a PS5?
An HDMI port replacement on a PS5 or Xbox Series X is $149.99. Overheating, power, chip and drive faults are priced after testing, because the same symptom can have different causes. Even at the top end, a PS5 repair usually costs far less than a new console, and your games and saves stay put.
Can you get your PS5 serviced by Sony?
Yes. Sony offers repairs through its PlayStation Fix and Replace service, and in the first year your limited warranty may cover a hardware fault. Check that first if your console is new. Physical damage like a bent HDMI port usually isn't covered, and that's where an independent shop can step in.
How long does a console repair take?
Most consoles take 1 to 3 business days at the shop. A cleaning can be quicker, and board-level or chip faults can take longer. Call before you drop off and we will tell you the current wait. Mail-in repairs also need time for shipping in both directions, so allow 1 to 2 weeks in total.
Do you repair consoles by mail?
Yes. You can mail your console to us from anywhere in the US. Fill out the mail-in form and we will send you the steps. Pack it well with plenty of padding, and leave out games, controllers and cables unless we ask for them, so nothing gets lost on the way.
Will I lose my saved games?
HDMI port and most hardware repairs don't touch your storage, but Nova Fix isn't responsible for data loss during repair. Back up your saves to the cloud or an external drive before you bring the console in, if you can. Tell us if there is anything on it you can't lose.
Do you repair PS4 and Xbox One consoles?
Yes. PS4 and Xbox One consoles get the same HDMI, overheating and power faults, and we repair them the same way. Prices can differ from the PS5, so call with your model. On older consoles, check the price against a used replacement first. If a used console costs less, we will tell you.
