Apple vs local repair comes down to coverage first. Under warranty or AppleCare, go to Apple. Out of coverage, a local shop usually costs far less on screens and back glass, but often not on batteries, and it can fix faults Apple would replace. Get both prices before you decide.
We run an independent shop on Chicago Ave, so keep in mind which side we are on. That said, the honest answer sends a lot of people to Apple, and the rest of this page says exactly when.
The mistake most people make with Apple vs local repair is treating it as one decision. Choosing between an Apple Store repair or third party shop is really three questions: are you covered, what is being repaired, and how soon you need it back. The answer can differ for a screen and a battery on the same phone.
Three worked examples
We compared our listed prices with Apple's out-of-warranty estimates, read on November 5, 2026. Apple shows the exact figure when you pick your model, and estimates can change. This is for a phone with no AppleCare.
| Repair | Nova Fix | Apple's estimate against ours | Better deal on price |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 14 screen | $140 | About double | Local shop |
| iPhone 13 Pro Max back glass | $180 | About three times | Local shop |
| iPhone 13 Pro Max battery | $130 | Around 30 percent lower | Apple |
That last row is the one to remember. Screens and older back glass favor a local shop by a wide margin. Batteries on iPhone 11 to 14 mostly do not. With active AppleCare, every row flips to Apple, because its service fees sit below our prices.
Apple and Nova Fix side by side
| Apple Store | Local repair shop (Nova Fix) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Published by model. Lower with AppleCare | Listed on our price list |
| Wait | Appointment usually needed. Some repairs get sent out | Walk in. Most iPhone screens in about 30 minutes |
| Parts | Apple parts, tested to Apple's standard | Options vary by repair. We explain them before we start |
| Warranty | 90 days or your remaining warranty, whichever is longer | 90 days on parts, labor may apply. 30 days on water damage |
| Service record | Recorded by Apple | Settings may show an unknown part |
| Older devices | Limited once a model drops off Apple's list | Listed back to older iPhones and iPads |
| Board-level faults | Priced as a major repair or replacement | Micro soldering done in house |
Our terms are on the warranty and policies page. Apple's are in its repair terms.
What independent repair means in practice
Independent iPhone repair does not mean a phone stops working properly. It does mean three things you should accept before you agree.
The part may not be Apple's, or may not be recognized as Apple's. Apple's Parts and Service History screen can label a part as unknown. Apple says that might affect trade-in value, so it matters more if you plan to sell soon.
Your coverage does not transfer. Apple's limited warranty does not cover damage caused by service outside Apple and its authorized providers. So if your phone is in coverage, an outside repair is rarely the smart first move.
Water resistance is not guaranteed. Any repair that opens a phone disturbs its seal. Apple already says resistance fades with normal wear, and we will not promise a rating after a repair.
In exchange you get speed, a lower price on most glass work, and a conversation with the person doing the repair. We do not claim any Apple authorization. If that status matters to you, ask the shop directly, because Apple runs an Independent Repair Provider program and a shop either is in it or is not.
When we'd send you to Apple
- Your device is under warranty and you did not cause the fault. That repair is likely free.
- You have AppleCare. Check it before you do anything else.
- Your model has a recall or service program. Check Apple's support site.
- You want Apple parts and a clean service record, for example on a new phone you plan to resell.
- It is a battery on a phone where Apple's estimate beats ours and you can wait for a slot.
When a local shop makes more sense
You are out of coverage and the repair is glass. You need the phone today. Your model has aged off Apple's list. Or Apple quoted you a large figure for what might be one failed part.
That last one is worth a second opinion. No power, no image or a dead charging circuit can sometimes be fixed at the board level, which often saves your data too. Our data recovery work starts from the same place.
How to pick a good shop
- The price, told to you before they start.
- A written warranty that says what is covered and for how long.
- Recent reviews that mention your repair. A high star count alone tells you less.
- Straight answers about what part they use and what the phone might show afterward.
- Whether they will tell you when a repair is not worth it, or when Apple is the better call.
