Liquid kills phones slowly. The water itself is rarely what does the damage. Minerals in the water carry current across parts of the board that were never meant to touch, and corrosion starts. It keeps going after the phone looks dry. That is why water damage phone repair works best in the first day or two, and why a phone that came back on is still worth opening.

We do water damaged phone repair for iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones and other Android brands at 1927 W Chicago Ave in West Town. Inspection happens the same day. Full repairs usually take 1 to 3 business days, and you hear the price first.

You have a phone dropped in water. Do this now.

  1. Turn it off. If it is already off, leave it off. Don't test it.
  2. Don't charge it. Power plus liquid is what does the real damage.
  3. Take off the case and pull the SIM tray. Both trap water.
  4. Wipe the outside. Hold it with the port facing down and dab it with a soft cloth.
  5. Skip the rice, the hair dryer and the oven. Heat damages the adhesive and the battery.
  6. Bring it in. The full first aid guide covers what to do if you can't get here today.

What the liquid was changes the job

Tell us exactly what happened. It changes how we clean the board and how hopeful we are.

  • Tap water, rain and Lake Michigan. The best case. Fresh water has fewer minerals, and a quick cleaning often does it, though sand and grit from the beach can jam speakers and ports.
  • Pool water. Chlorine eats at metal contacts faster than tap water does. Don't wait on this one.
  • Salt water. The worst common case. Salt keeps pulling moisture from the air and corrodes aggressively, so a beach phone needs opening right away.
  • Coffee, soda, beer and juice. Sugar and acid leave a sticky film on connectors. Keys, ports and speakers often fail first, and more parts need replacing.
  • Toilet water. It behaves like tap water on the board. Tell us anyway, so we can handle the phone properly.
  • Washing machine. The combination of soap, heat and long soak time makes this one of the harder jobs.

How to tell water damage from something else

A moisture warning at the port doesn't always mean serious damage. iPhones show a liquid detected alert, and Galaxy phones show a moisture icon, when the connector is damp. Unplug everything and leave the port dry for a few hours. If the alert clears and everything works, you may be fine. Avoid the emergency override option. It lets current through a wet port.

Other signs point deeper: a screen that dims in patches, a speaker that stays muffled for more than a day, or fog inside a camera lens. On iPhones, a small indicator inside the SIM slot turns red after contact with liquid. It tells you the phone got wet at some point, not how bad things are.

What realistic looks like

Water damage phone repair has three common endings, and it is better to know them before you start.

Everything comes back. The phone gets cleaned, corrosion hadn't reached anything important, and you carry on.

The phone works, but something doesn't. Face ID, a speaker, a microphone or the charging port may need a new part, and some of those can't be restored. We list what works and what doesn't when we hand it back.

The phone can't be saved, but the data might be. A board that won't run normally may still run long enough to copy files. That is a different goal, so tell us if your photos matter more than the phone. See data recovery.

How wet phone repair in Chicago gets priced

There's no fixed price on this one, so it shows Call for price. Three things set the number: how far the corrosion spread, which parts have to be replaced, and whether the board needs micro soldering. We open the phone and clean it, then quote the rest, so you decide with the facts in front of you. If the repair doesn't make sense for the phone you have, we will tell you.

Why the warranty is 30 days

Most of our repairs carry 90 days on parts. Water damage repairs carry 30, because corrosion can keep spreading on a board even after a good cleaning, and it can take out parts we never touched. We would rather tell you that now. Read the full warranty and policies.

Back up as soon as the phone is working again. A recovered phone is a good time to make sure every photo is somewhere else too. We work on iPhones and Samsung and other Android phones. Call (773) 741-6682 before you come if you want to check how busy the bench is.

Needed my laptop keyboard replaced, but I couldn’t be without my laptop for a few days. I bought the replacement keyboard on Amazon and found him through Yelp. After watching a YouTube video, I quickly realized it was more complicated than I wanted to tackle myself! He replaced the keyboard within a couple of hours, and I picked it up the same day. Straightforward, fast, and clearly knows what he’s doing. Highly recommend!

Came in with a iPhone SE 2016 with 64% battery health. Was told at another store that they wouldn’t be able to help. At Nova Fix Alex fixed it for me in under an hour for $60! Super worth it, fast and efficient!! Thank you!

What do people ask us?

Can a water damaged phone be fixed?

Often, but we can't promise it. The result depends on the liquid, how long the phone stayed wet and whether anyone powered it on or charged it. Phones that reach us quickly have the best chance. Phones that sat for weeks or were charged wet are harder. We tell you what we find before you pay for repairs.

How long can a phone stay wet before it's ruined?

There is no set time. Corrosion starts when liquid and power meet on the board, and it keeps growing while the phone sits. A phone that was switched off right away and reaches us within a day or two has a better chance than one left in a drawer. Don't wait to see if it dries.

Does rice work?

No. Rice can't reach liquid inside a sealed phone, it leaves dust in the ports, and it costs you time, which is the one thing that matters. A dry, airy spot with the case off does more. Silica gel packets are slightly better than rice, but neither one removes corrosion. Opening the phone does.

My phone dried out and works fine. Should I still bring it in?

If it went fully under, yes. Minerals left behind on the board can keep corroding for days or weeks, and the first sign is often a part that fails much later. Back up your data today, while the phone still works. Then have it opened so you know whether the board is clean.

Can you get photos off a water damaged phone?

Sometimes. If we can get the board running long enough, we can often copy your data. Check iCloud or Google Photos first, because everything may already be backed up. If it isn't, tell us that data is your priority, and we will treat the job as a recovery from the start instead of a phone repair.

Does AppleCare or insurance cover water damage?

Apple's standard warranty doesn't cover liquid damage. AppleCare+ and most carrier insurance plans cover it as accidental damage for a set fee. If you have a plan, check that price before you pay anyone. It may beat a repair, though you usually get a replacement phone, so make sure your data is backed up.
