A melted connector does not always mean a dead card. On many failed cards the damage stays in the plug and the few millimeters around it, while the GPU itself is fine. We replace melted 12VHPWR power connectors on RTX 4090, RTX 5090 and similar cards in West Town, Chicago, or by mail-in from anywhere in the US.

Why 12VHPWR connectors melt

The connector carries a lot of current through small pins. If the plug isn't fully seated, or the cable is bent hard right at the connector, a few pins can end up carrying more than they should. Those pins heat up, and the plastic around them softens, browns and melts.

The updated 12V-2x6 connector on newer cards changed the pin lengths to make a bad connection less likely, but it hasn't removed the need for a clean fit. Power-hungry cards run close to the connector's limit, so an RTX 4090 connector repair is the job we expect most often, along with its newer siblings.

You can lower the risk on your next build. Push the plug in until it's fully seated and you can't see a gap. Keep tight bends at least an inch or so away from the connector. Don't reuse a cable that has been through a melt.

Is it the card, the cable or the power supply?

Look at both ends once the PC is off and unplugged.

  • Plug and card socket browned. The connector has overheated at the card, and it needs replacing. The cable is finished as well.
  • Only the cable end is marked. The socket on the card may have survived, but look closely at each pin.
  • The power supply end has marks. Check that socket too, as a damaged supply can ruin a new card.
  • Pins look clean, but the PC shuts off under load. Your power supply may be the problem, not the card. Test with another supply first.

Photos help. Send a clear shot of the plug and socket with your quote request, and we can often tell you what to expect before you ship.

How we repair it

Every GPU repair starts with a close look at the connector, the pins on the card and the board around them. Then we remove the damaged connector, clean the pads and solder a new connector in place. We check the fuses and power stages nearby, since a melt can take those with it. Before the card leaves, we put it under load to confirm it holds up.

If the damage goes further, our micro soldering and board repair service covers it, and we tell you the new price first. The job can stop at any point if the numbers stop making sense.

We take current RTX cards with this connector. Tell us the exact model and brand when you get in touch, because board layouts differ between makers. If we can't source the right part for your card, we will tell you before you send it.

Is it worth repairing?

For a high-end card, GPU repair nearly always makes sense, as long as the damage stayed near the connector. A 4090 or 5090 costs far more to replace than a connector repair. For a lower-priced card, weigh our quote against a used replacement. If a melted GPU connector has burned deep into the board and through layers, the card may be past saving, and we will say so.

What GPU repair costs

Call for a price on your card. We confirm the cost after we inspect it, and you approve it before we start. Parts carry our 90-day warranty, and labor may apply. That covers the connector and our work on it, not a new melt from a poorly seated or reused cable, so fit a new cable and seat it carefully.

Packing a card for mail-in

Start your mail-in request first, so we know it's coming. Then pack the card.

  1. Put the card in an anti-static bag.
  2. Wrap it in thick padding so nothing can flex the board.
  3. Use a sturdy box and fill the empty space so the card can't shift.
  4. Leave the cable and any support bracket at home, unless we ask for them.

Graphics cards are heavy and expensive, so use a tracked service and buy shipping insurance for the card's value. Want GPU repair in Chicago instead? Bring the card to 1927 W Chicago Ave during open hours. Our 12VHPWR repair work is the same either way.

Needed my laptop keyboard replaced, but I couldn’t be without my laptop for a few days. I bought the replacement keyboard on Amazon and found him through Yelp. After watching a YouTube video, I quickly realized it was more complicated than I wanted to tackle myself! He replaced the keyboard within a couple of hours, and I picked it up the same day. Straightforward, fast, and clearly knows what he’s doing. Highly recommend!

Came in with a iPhone SE 2016 with 64% battery health. Was told at another store that they wouldn’t be able to help. At Nova Fix Alex fixed it for me in under an hour for $60! Super worth it, fast and efficient!! Thank you!

What do people ask us?

Can a melted 12VHPWR connector be repaired?

Often, yes. If the heat stayed around the connector, a board-level repair can replace it and put the card back in service. If the damage reaches the board or power components, the job gets bigger. We inspect the card first and tell you what we see before you commit to anything.

How much does GPU connector repair cost?

Call us for a price on your card. The cost depends on the card and on how far the heat damage reached, so we confirm it after we inspect it. You will hear the number before any work starts, and nothing changes unless you agree to it first.

Should I keep using the cable that melted?

No. Once a connector has melted, treat the cable as damaged too and replace it. Reusing it risks another failure on the new connector. Shut the PC down and unplug it if you notice a burnt smell or browning on the plug, then bring the card to us or mail it in.

Can I mail my graphics card to you?

Yes. Start on our mail-in page and we will send you the steps. Use an anti-static bag, wrap the card in plenty of padding, and use a sturdy box so it cannot move. Leave the cable out of the box unless we ask you to send it.

Should I claim on my card's warranty first?

Yes, if it's still active. Many card makers warrant their cards for several years, and some will replace a melted connector. Look up your serial number on the maker's site before you do anything else. A third-party repair usually ends that warranty, so only come to us once that option is gone or refused.

Do you repair other graphics card faults?

Connector repair is the job we are set up for. For a card with no display, artifacts or fan faults, call first and describe it. Some of those are board-level jobs we can take on, and some aren't worth the cost on an older card. We will tell you honestly before you ship anything.
