Is AppleCare worth it? For a new Pro phone and someone who drops things, usually yes, because Apple's repair fees without a plan are high and the plan's fees are low. On an older iPhone, or if you are careful and use a case, paying for one repair when it happens often costs less.
A repair shop has an obvious reason to tell you to skip AppleCare. So here is the part that goes against our interest: for some people it is a good deal, and if you are one of them, we would rather you bought it. A shop that only ever argues for repair is not worth listening to.
We read Apple's plan details and fees on November 5, 2026, on its iPhone repair page and AppleCare page. Apple changes both, so check them the day you decide.
What does AppleCare actually cover on an iPhone?
Four things matter.
- Accidental damage. Apple says drops and spills are covered, with no cap on repairs, for a service fee each time.
- Battery service. If capacity drops below 80 percent, Apple replaces the battery at no extra charge.
- Faster replacement. Express Replacement can send you a phone before you send yours back.
- Theft and loss. Only on plans that include it, with a deductible and a claim limit.
AppleCare One rolls several devices into one monthly plan. If you own an iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, compare that against separate plans.
How does the plan cost compare with paying for one repair?
The applecare service fee is the number that makes the plan look good. On the day we checked, Apple's screen fee with AppleCare was lower than every iPhone screen price on our list. Here is the shape of the comparison for a phone with no plan.
| Repair | With AppleCare | Without a plan, at Apple | Without a plan, at Nova Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen | A low flat fee | Highest of the three | Often about half of Apple's estimate |
| Back glass | A low flat fee | Varies widely by model | Far lower on older Pro models |
| Battery under 80 percent | No extra charge | Moderate | Similar to Apple on many models |
| Other accidental damage | A higher flat fee | Often several times the plan fee | Depends on the fault |
To do your own math, add up what the plan will cost over the time you will keep the phone, then ask how many repairs you would need before it pays for itself. For iPhone repair without AppleCare, use our price list and Apple's estimate for your model. Our screen cost guide has the side-by-side figures.
Two years of AppleCare One at its listed entry price adds up to more than any iPhone screen on our list. So it comes down to one question: how likely are you to need more than one repair, or one very expensive repair?
Who comes out ahead with AppleCare?
- Heavy droppers on a new Pro or Pro Max. The screens and enclosures are the most expensive repairs on Apple's list, and one bad fall can cost several times the plan.
- Anyone with an iPhone Duo. Apple's inner display estimate is the highest screen repair on its iPhone list. Buy the plan, or call us before you assume a price.
- People who keep phones for years and want the battery included.
- People who cannot be without a phone. Express Replacement is hard to beat.
- People planning to resell. Apple repairs keep the service record clean.
Who is better off skipping it?
- Careful owners with a good case. If your last three phones never broke, the plan is mostly a fee.
- Owners of older phones. The repair prices are lower and so is the value at risk.
- Budget buyers. A plan on a low-priced phone can approach the cost of the repair it protects you from.
- Anyone with overlapping cover. Some credit cards and carrier plans include phone protection. Read those terms before you pay twice.
If you skip it, put the same monthly amount aside. You will either have the money for a repair or you will have kept it.
What happens to your options if you let the plan lapse?
You lose the low fees the day coverage ends, and any repair goes back to Apple's out-of-warranty price or an independent shop. If the plan expired, Apple says you might be able to buy new coverage within 45 days after it ended, so check that window before it closes.
Your phone is not penalized for having been covered. You can come to an independent shop at that point, and most of the decisions in our Apple vs local repair guide apply.
Our straight answer
Buy it for a new high-end phone if you know you break things. Skip it on an older phone and keep the money. If you already have a plan and your phone just broke, use the plan. If you don't, see our iPhone repairs and call (773) 741-6682 before you decide.
