Is It Worth Replacing Your iPhone Battery or Should You Upgrade?

Is it worth replacing your iPhone battery? Usually yes. If the phone still gets iOS updates and the screen and port work, a battery from $49.99 to $130 is the cheapest way to get more years from it. Skip it if the phone has other faults or support is ending soon.

A battery is usually the best deal in phone repair. It is one of the least expensive jobs on our list, and it fixes the thing people complain about most. But "usually" is doing some work in that sentence. Here is how to tell which side your phone is on, including the cases where we will tell you to keep your money.

When is replacing an iPhone battery worth it?

Should I replace my iPhone battery? Run through three questions.

  1. Does the phone still get iOS updates? If not, the phone has a limited future no matter what battery it has.
  2. Is the rest of it healthy? Screen, port, buttons and cameras all working.
  3. Would you keep this phone if it lasted all day? If you want a new one anyway, a battery is money spent delaying a decision you have already made.

Three yes answers means the battery is almost certainly worth it.

What battery health number should worry you?

Open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery Health. Apple's measure of iPhone battery health is Maximum Capacity, and Apple treats 80 percent as the design line.

Maximum Capacity What it usually means
90 percent and up Healthy. A drain problem is probably software
80 to 89 percent Worn but serviceable. Replace if your day no longer fits
Under 80 percent Worn. Replacement is a fair call

The number is not the whole story. A phone at 83 percent that shuts off at 20 percent has a battery problem. A phone at 79 percent that still lasts your whole day has no urgent problem at all. Go by how the phone behaves, and use the number to confirm it.

How does a new battery compare with the cost of a new iPhone?

The comparison is not close. Our listed batteries top out at $130, and a new iPhone costs many times that. Even a good used phone usually costs several times the price of a battery.

Look at it as cost per year. If a battery buys two more years on a phone that does what you need, that is a small fraction of what those two years would cost on a new phone. It also skips the setup, and the phone you already paid off stays paid off.

Compare the actual price for your model in our iPhone battery replacement cost guide. On iPhone 12 to 14 models, Apple's estimate is often the same as ours or lower, so look at both.

When should you skip the battery and upgrade?

We will tell you this at the counter too.

  • The screen is also failing, and the two repairs together approach the price of a working used phone.
  • The phone no longer gets iOS updates, and apps have started dropping support.
  • It has a port or board fault that a battery won't touch.
  • Storage is the real problem. A battery does not help a phone that is full.
  • You have a trade-in deal that pays more for your current phone than the repair would save.

If your drain started suddenly after an update, the phone might not need a battery at all. Read our guide to an iPhone battery draining fast first.

Does a new battery make an old iPhone faster?

Sometimes, and for a real reason. An old battery can struggle to deliver peak power, and Apple's software can manage performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns. A healthy battery takes that pressure off, so an aging phone can feel quicker in everyday use.

It will not turn an old processor into a new one. If the phone was slow because of its age or a full storage, a battery won't change that. Expect fewer shutdowns and a longer day, and treat any speed gain as a bonus.

Most swaps happen while you wait. See how it works on our iPhone battery page, or check every model on our price list.

What do people ask us?

How long does an iPhone battery last?

Apple designs iPhone 14 and earlier batteries to keep 80 percent of their capacity at 500 full charge cycles, and iPhone 15 models at 1000, under ideal conditions. In real use, heat and heavy charging habits shorten that. Many people start to notice a difference somewhere around two to three years.

What does a battery replacement cost?

Our listed iPhone batteries run from $49.99 to $130, depending on the model. iPhone 15, 16, 17, 18 and Duo are quoted by phone, so call (773) 741-6682. Our battery cost guide has each model next to Apple's estimate, and on many models Apple's figure is the lower one.

Will a third party battery show a warning in Settings?

It can. Apple says an unknown part message may appear when a replacement part cannot be verified, with a notification when you first unlock the phone. The phone keeps working normally. Ask us what to expect on your model before we start, because the health reading can also behave differently.

Is the battery covered by a warranty?

Yes. Parts carry our 90-day warranty, and labor may apply. If your phone has active AppleCare and the battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity, Apple lists that service at no extra charge, so check your coverage before you pay us or anyone else.

Can I replace a battery on a phone with a cracked screen?

Usually, yes, but tell us first. A cracked screen can make the job riskier, because the display has to come off to reach the battery, and a damaged screen can break further on the way. It often makes sense to price both repairs at the same time and decide together.
